Going in. Breakout Retest: 1h close 7.467 held retest of 7.453, the 20-bar high cleared 2 bars ago (low 7.407). Daily uptrend intact (swing low 7.276), the 5d dip is a pullback not a break. Stop 7.369965 (1.3%), target 7.66107 (2R). Wrong if close reclaims below 7.453.
Coming out. target — Traded up to 7.707 and filled at 7.6611.
Looking back. This confirmed my core breakout-retest principle: waiting for a clean retest hold of the breakout level (7.453) with structure intact (higher swing low, uptrend confirmed) gave me a high-quality entry that let the target fill cleanly at 2.68R. I'll keep sizing stops off the retest low rather than the breakout candle itself, since that's what kept risk tight while giving the trade room to run to target.

Going in. Breakout Retest: 15m close 716.43 held retest of 711.98 (20-bar high cleared 3 bars ago), retest bar low 714.58 closed in upper half of range. Daily is a narrowing coil above rising SMA20/50, not fighting the trend. QQQ carries a 63% short interest - fuel if the level holds. Invalidated by a close back below 711.98.
Coming out. stop — Gapped through at 703.36, so it filled there rather than at 708.4201. A stop pays the spread: 0.3517 worse.
Looking back. Gap risk through a weekend/overnight session means my stop level is a suggestion, not a guarantee—when holding through a gap-prone window, I need to size for the realistic slippage-adjusted loss, not the theoretical stop distance. This confirms the principle that stops pay the spread and worse in a gap: I'll treat overnight/weekend holds on breakout-retest setups as carrying extra tail risk and either reduce size or tighten the invalidation to intraday-only confirmation before letting a position sit through an open gap.

Going in. Lower High: 15m downtrend (50-bar mean 4.22 falling, LH/LL structure), bounce to 4.125 tagged 20-bar mean 4.14, close 4.055 turned below prior low 4.06. Daily structure is a range not an uptrend, so no tide conflict. Crowded short (56% of volume) breaking down is confirmation not squeeze fuel. Stop above bounce high 4.145625; invalidated on a close back above it.
Coming out. target — Opened past the price and filled at 3.8738.
Looking back. This confirms my core short setup: a lower-high fade off a 20-bar mean tag, with the daily tide neutral (range, not uptrend) rather than opposed, gave the trade room to work without fighting a higher timeframe. Getting filled better than the trigger price (short at 3.8738 vs. planned 4.05) reminds me that waiting for the actual break/close confirmation rather than chasing the level can improve entry quality. I'll keep using the prior swing high as the invalidation point and let the crowded-positioning data serve as confirmation, not a reason to fade the setup.

Going in. Breakdown Retest: Daily structure is a genuine downtrend (lower highs/lower lows, last swing high 1.4507, last swing low 1.3098) — not a pullback in an uptrend, unlike AAVE/NEAR which I'm passing. 1h close 1.3516 failed the retest of the lost 20-bar low 1.3709. Stop 1.3778 over the retest high; wrong if price reclaims and closes back above 1.3709.

Going in. Range: 20-bar range 1204.93-1296.02 (7% wide), low touched 7x. Close 1227.24 near the low, held it. Stop 1192.8807 (2.8% below), target the range high 1296.02, ~2R. Wrong if a close prints below 1192.88, breaking the range.
Coming out. stop — Traded down to 1176.58 and filled at 1192.8807. A stop pays the spread: 0.5964 worse.
Looking back. Range longs against a floor touched 7 times were already telling me the level was weak, not strong—repeated tests usually precede a break, not another bounce. I'll treat a 7x-touched low as a warning sign to size down or skip, and remember that stops through thin liquidity in fast moves pay extra spread, so I should widen my R estimate for slippage on breakout-prone ranges rather than assume a clean fill.

Target 2.651 range high = 1.59R, meets play's 1.5R minimum. 1h structure reads uptrend (HH/HL) and daily swing structure is also uptrend, aligned with BTC tide. Going in. Range: 20-bar range 0.757-0.8287 (9% wide), low touched 6x, close 0.77 held the low. Stop 0.74943 (1% below low), target range high = 2R. Daily structure is a clean uptrend (last swing low 0.7038), so the 1h downtrend read is a pullback, not a breakdown. Wrong if close breaks back below 0.757.
Coming out. stop — Traded down to 0.7419 and filled at 0.7494. A stop pays the spread: 0.0004 worse.
Looking back. This confirms the core range-trade principle: when price has already touched the range low 6 times, that support is exhausted, not reliable, and treating a 6th test as a high-probability bounce was the flaw, not the execution or stop placement. Next time I'll weight the number of prior touches against the level's strength before entering, since repeated tests erode a level rather than validate it. Slippage on the stop (0.04%) was normal and not the lesson here—the entry thesis on a tired range low was.

at the open · Sep 9, 2026 · as the desk saw itat the close · Sep 10, 2026 · the plan, the fill and what came of it
Going in. Range: MSTR held the low of a 6%-wide 20-bar range (132.88-141.87), low touched 10 times, close 135.095. Stop 2.6% below entry under range low, target at range high ~2R. Tide (BTC) rising, supports long. Invalidated by a close back below 131.5512 (range broken).
Coming out. stop — Gapped through at 128.465, so it filled there rather than at 131.5512. A stop pays the spread: 0.0642 worse.
Looking back. Range trades on a name with MSTR's gap risk need wider stops or smaller size, because a 2.6% stop under a well-touched range low is exactly where a gap-through will land, turning a planned -1R into -2.16R. The slippage itself confirms what I already know: a stop pays the spread, and on volatile/gappy names that cost can run well past normal spread into a real tax on the trade. Next time, on high-beta gap-prone names I'll either size for the stop-out-with-slippage cost, not the theoretical R, or use a mental/wider stop with staged confirmation instead of a hard level sitting right on an obvious range boundary.

Going in. Range: 20-bar range 4.055-4.53 (10.5% wide), low touched 7x. Close 4.135 held the low, upper half of bar. Stop below range low by 1% at 4.01445 (2.9% risk). Target range high 4.53, ~3.3R, well past the 1.5R floor. Wrong if price closes back below 4.055 - range breaks down.
Coming out. stop — Gapped through at 3.935, so it filled there rather than at 4.0145. A stop pays the spread: 0.002 worse.
Looking back. This confirmed that stops placed just 1% below a well-tested range low offer little protection against gap risk—when a level gets touched 7x, its eventual break can be sharp and slippage-heavy rather than orderly. Next time I'll size range trades assuming the stop fill could run 1.5-2x the intended risk on a breakdown, or widen the buffer below a heavily-tested low rather than hugging it tight.

Coming out. target — Opened past the price and filled at 223.58.
Looking back. This confirmed my range-top short thesis: waiting for rejection at a well-touched range high with a close in the lower half of the bar gave a clean, favorable entry and let the trade run to target without needing to babysit it. Principle confirmed: when price fills better than planned entry (here, short at 223.58 vs 237.35 intended), let the stop/target math and R stand as originally sized rather than second-guessing the improved fill.

Coming out. stop — Traded down to 0.0881 and filled at 0.0881. A stop pays the spread: 0 worse.
Prices, sides and R; never the size or the money. A dashed box is the plan before the fill; a solid one is the trade as it went.
the playbook
Base Breakout
testing · from the shelfno record
Entry. DRAFT - correct this. Price clears a defined multi-week base or prior range high, and the entry is taken on the clearance rather than in anticipation of it. Eleven closed trades, all long, all in names that were already moving: COIN, MSTR x3, PLTR, RXRX, BTC x2, NEAR x3.
Stop. Beneath the low of the base being cleared. YOUR RECORD IS UNUSUALLY CLEAR about this: stops on these eleven ranged from 1.3% to 14.1% of entry, and the two losses had among the widest (14.1% on RXRX, 7.3% on NEAR) while the two largest wins had the tightest (1.3% and 1.7%, both NEAR). A wide stop here has not been protection - it has been a bigger denominator and a worse trade. If the base does not define a stop inside roughly 8%, that is a reason not to take it rather than a reason to widen.
Exit. Planned reward:risk has been 1.7 to 2.9 on the ordinary ones and the realised R has usually beaten it, which says the exits have been patient enough. Median hold is five days; the one 46-day hold returned 2.48R and was not an outlier in R terms. Exit on a close back inside the base.
STRC · long · closed Sep 18, 2026 · loss · -0.03R
Flag Pennant
testing · from the shelfno record
Entry. DRAFT - correct this. A pause inside an existing trend - a flag or pennant - entered on resumption rather than on the pause. Three closed trades, all long, all continuation: SOL twice and MSTR once.
Stop. Beneath the flag. Stops have been 3.6%, 4.1% and 11.8%; the widest was also the longest hold at 46 days, which is worth watching - a flag that needs a 12% stop and six weeks may not be a flag.
Exit. THREE WINS FROM THREE, AND THAT IS NOT A 100% SETUP. Raw expectancy is 1.37R and the shrunk figure is 0.18R, because three instances cannot tell an edge from a run of luck. The returns have been modest and consistent - 1.68R, 1.00R, 1.43R - which is what a continuation trade should look like. It needs nine more instances before the number means anything.
Capitulation Washout
testing · from the shelfno record
Entry. DRAFT - correct this. Entering after a flush rather than during one: a high-volume break down that reclaims. Three closed trades, all long - SOL twice, MRVL once.
Stop. This is the play where your stops have been least consistent: 0.7%, 12.1% and 8.7%. The 0.7% one returned 9.39R and the 12.1% one was the loss. On three trades that is an anecdote rather than a finding, but it points the same way Base Breakout does.
Exit. Held 44, 26 and 6 days - the widest spread of the three plays, which suggests the exit is being decided in the moment rather than in advance. Writing one down is the cheapest improvement available here.
Breakdown
testing · from the shelfno record

Stop. Above the flag's high by half a percent. A flag whose high is more than eight percent from the entry is not a flag; the trade is skipped.
Exit. Two R, or a close above the flag's high, whichever comes first.
Breakout Retest
testing · from the shelfno record
Entry. LONG. Within the last six bars a close cleared the prior twenty-bar high, and no close has lost it since. Trigger: a bar whose low comes back to that level, within half a percent, and closes above it in the upper half of its own range - the retest that holds.
Stop. Under the retest bar's low, or the level, whichever is lower, by half a percent.
Exit. Two R, or a close back below the level, whichever comes first.
Entry. SHORT. Within the last six bars a close lost the prior twenty-bar low, and no close has regained it since. Trigger: a bar whose high comes back up to that level, within half a percent, and closes below it in the lower half of its own range - the retest that fails.
Stop. Over the retest bar's high, or the level, whichever is higher, by half a percent.

Range
testing · from the shelfno record

Stop. Below the range low by one percent. A close below the range low means the range is broken.
Exit. The range high, or a close below the range low, whichever comes first. The play wants the high at least one and a half times the risk away.
